# Storage layer The storage adapter owns `active.log`, `snapshot.bin`, the data-directory lock, in-memory live/deleted state, synchronous PUT/DEL writes, startup replay, and compaction. It depends only on the UTF-8, opaque-handle API in `src/sys`; OS file and durability primitives do not leak into this layer. The binary format is private but versioned. Invalid complete records are never skipped; only an incomplete EOF record is truncated. Snapshot generation must match the active log before snapshot state is trusted.
